Alchemy of l9th Century
Luster Glass is Rediscovered SANTA CRUZ, CALIF., AND MAUI, HAWAII --- Luster Glass has always been rare and coveted. In the late 1920s, when Tiffany & Co. decided to discontinue their line of art glass and Steuben Glass was sold to Corning Glass, the ability to make prized, luminous, hand-blown Luster Glass was lost. The process had been so secretive and segmented that no one person knew how to do everything to make a finished lustrous piece. The method of making it has been rediscovered by Master glass blower, Rick Strini, who works from his private studios in Maui and Santa Cruz, Calif., creating beautiful, handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces every year. Strini is product of the 1960’s revival of studio art glass. For forty years he has delighted art lovers and collectors alike with his stunning custom-designed vases, bowls, glasses and stemware. Recognized as a Master, Strini is one of a very select few who have perfected this lost art form. His pieces have been celebrated and showcased at the Smithsonian Institution, de Young Museum, the White House under Clinton’s administration and in many prestigious catalogues. Glistening Gallery A walk through Strini’s gallery is mesmerizing as his Luster glass pieces shimmer in the light, reflecting new patterns and paths adding to the art’s uniqueness. Fluid, elegant silhouettes and vibrant translucent colors combine with iridescent copper and gold. Delicate classic designs are appliquéd on artful vessels that are magically one color inside and another on the outside. In other more contemporary styles, Strini captures air bubbles within the glass that delight the eye and reflect the light from every angle. His newest lines feature vibrant and subtle motifs and are inspired by underwater life and sea forms. These new pieces, since they are one-of-a-kind, are already strong collectibles. Creating Masterpieces Each of Strini’s works is individually made by his own hands. There is nothing mechanical about it. He personally shapes and creates each brilliant piece—his artistry limited only by the length of his arms. Working with no assistants, every nuance in shape, design, color and luminescence is derived from the heart of artist Strini. He creates a unique hot glass color palate for each piece and personally signs each one as it is finished in a cooling furnace. Strini is rare among glass artists in that he controls the process from beginning to end. No molded glass here. Celebrating 40 Years! Strini Art Glass will celebrate 40 years in the business on Aug. 6 and 7 at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. Strini encourages the public to drop by, introduce themselves and view his art. He will be at the exhibit both days to speak and answer questions. Strini sells vases, glasses, bowls, lamps and stemware. The one-of-a-kind pieces are exquisite, yet affordable, offered in a full range of prices. They can be purchased at his studios at 2400 Chanticleer Ave., Suite H, in Santa Cruz, Calif. and in Dolphin Galleries and Olas Gallery in Maui, Hawaii, or in additional galleries in almost every state.
